What is thread count?

What are the features of a good quality bed sheet? There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing. We have already talked about size and material and now it’s time to focus on technology.

In recent years thread count has become a signifier for the quality. We often believe that higher thread count means better sheets. What really is a thread count though?

Thread count simply indicates the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Both Horizontal and vertical threads are counted in order to calculate it. For example, our 300-thread count sheets are made up of 150 horizontal threads and 150 vertical threads woven together.

Too high thread count will result in restricted airflow while you sleep and lead to restless sleep.

According to New York magazine, the fuss around thread counts it a bit unnecessary. Although it is important it is certainly not the first to think about. Bed sheet material should be considered prior to the thread count. Our sheets are made of a 100% combed cotton. Cotton has many benefits, including that it is kind to the skin, breathable and easy to maintain.

High quality long staple cotton fibers are key when looking for a soft, smooth feel and it also gets better with every washing. Definitely focus on a bed sheet’s material and its quality rather than thread count only.

Preethi Gopinath, director of Textiles MFA program at Parsons told New York Times that a thread count ranging between 250-300 is optimal. Numbers much higher than this mean that manufacturers are artificially increasing it using two-ply yarns.
